Caring for handmade pieces in a busy kitchen

Handmade ceramics are made to be encountered, but every piece has its own use and care requirements. Begin with the maker’s instructions rather than assuming that all fired clay behaves in the same way.

Know what the piece is for

Check whether the object is intended for food, hot liquids, ovens, microwaves or dishwashers. A vase, sculptural vessel and drinking cup can share a visual language while having different finishes and purposes. Keep any care card that arrives with the piece. If the intended use is unclear, ask before experimenting.

Avoid unnecessary knocks

Give handles and projecting edges room in cupboards. Do not force unlike shapes into a tight stack simply because they fit once. When washing by hand, support the piece securely and dry it before storing. Sudden temperature changes or hard impacts may damage ceramics; follow the specific guidance supplied for the material and finish.

Make room for long use

Inspect a favourite piece occasionally for changes that affect its function. A chipped or cracked food-contact surface may need assessment rather than continued use. If a piece is no longer suitable for its original purpose, consider a safe decorative role. Thoughtful care is not about keeping an object untouched; it is about understanding how to live with it.
